About

Plain-English Working Capital Guidance for SME Owners

Working Capital Days exists because most working capital advice is written for finance professionals, not the business owners who actually need it.

If you run a small or mid-sized business and you have ever been profitable on paper but short of cash in practice, this site is for you.

We provide free calculators, practical guides, and industry benchmarks to help you understand and improve your cash conversion cycle, days sales outstanding, days payable outstanding, and every other metric that determines whether your business has enough cash to operate.

Who writes this?

Working Capital Days is written by James Harford. James has over a decade of experience in accounting and strategic finance, working with SMEs across the UK. He built this site to bridge the gap between academic finance theory and the practical cash flow problems that real business owners face every day.

Our approach

Every piece of content on this site follows three rules:

  1. Plain English first. No jargon without explanation.
  2. Practical, not theoretical. If it does not help you make a better decision, we do not publish it.
  3. SME-focused. Our benchmarks, examples, and advice are built for businesses with £500k–£5m revenue, not FTSE 100 corporates.

This site provides educational content about working capital management. It does not constitute financial advice. Please consult a qualified accountant or financial adviser for guidance specific to your business.
